The 3-step skincare routine for every guy

When it comes to skincare, (correct me if I’m wrong) I have a sneaking suspicion that men have no clue what to do but are too afraid to ask. Rather than deal with the daunting task of sifting through tons of skincare information, I think most men would rather go with the all or nothing approach, leaning strongly towards nothing.

The truth is, skincare doesn’t have to be complicated. In fact, the less complicated the better and that rings true for both males and females. Skincare really can be fuss-free and easy, as long as you abide by this easy-to-follow skincare routine.

Step 1: Cleanse

Not just with water though, that doesn’t count. Cleansing your face with a proper facial cleanser, BOTH day and night are imperative for keeping skin clean (and hygienic). Getting rid of the day’s buildup of dirt and grime can do wonders for your skin and wellbeing.

Know your skin type. Is it dry or oily or a combination of both? Look for a gentle cleanser that does a good job of cleaning your skin. If your skin literally feels squeaky clean, time to move on to find a gentler cleanser. Skin should feel refreshed, plump and supple after a good cleanse.

Step 2: Moisturise

Moisturisers are often overlooked as a non-essential, especially in warm and humid Singapore. Just because your skin feels and looks oily doesn’t mean you can scrimp on moisturisers. In other words, oily skin does not equate well moisturised and hydrated skin.

Moisturisers are essential for creating a protective barrier on your skin and to prevent skin from drying out. There’s just a different moisturiser for different skin types.

For oily skin types, do not fret. Look for moisturisers that are lightweight and if the label says non-comedogenic, that’s your go-to product.

Step 3: Sunscreen

Most men don’t seem to think this is important. While women are religiously slapping on sunscreen to keep pigmentation at bay, men aren’t. Sun damage is real and can accelerate the ageing process and in more extreme cases, cause skin cancer.

When it comes to protecting your skin from the sun, all you need is a sunscreen that provides at least SPF30 protection. Apply sunscreen daily, regardless of being indoors or outdoors (because the sun’s rays do penetrate windows and glass doors too).
