3 simple steps for a more even skin tone

Even, flawless skin need not be a thing of unattainable dreams. While it’s true many factors come into play and may get in the way of that elusive smooth buttery skin, ranging from pimples, pigmentation and redness, getting to the bottom of what’s causing uneven skin tone is the only way to go about it.

To achieve an even skin tone, the two main categories to focus on are texture and colour. To address this correctly, a dermatologist would look at ways to smooth the texture, decrease the appearance of brown spots and redness. The three simple steps are a must-have for your skincare regime if an even skin tone is what you’re after.

#1 Sunscreen. Sunscreen. Sunscreen.

There’s no running away from it, sunscreen is one if not the most important step in achieving an even skin tone. Sunscreen is the most basic way of protecting your skin from the damage UV rays can do to your skin, from speeding up the aging process (more unnecessary lines and wrinkles!), increasing pigmentation and increasing the size of pores as your skin loses elasticity.

Look for a sunscreen with at least SPF 30 and be sure to apply it generously all over your face, neck and any part of the skin that will be exposed to the sun.

#2 Use retinol at night

Retinol, a vitamin A derivative, is an excellent ingredient to add to your arsenal of skincare products when it comes to antiaging and dealing with uneven skin. Besides stimulating collagen production, retinol also helps to speed up cell turnover, ideal for lightening dark spots as new skin cells replace old ones.

But it must be noted that retinol is best used at night as it can be photosensitizing, ie it makes your skin more susceptible to the sun.

#3 Vitamin C for daytime

Another all-important ingredient to incorporate daily is Vitamin C. Besides brightening your skin, it’s also a potent antioxidant, protecting your skin from free radicals that are responsible for hyperpigmentation and creating uneven skin tone.

Complement your night-time routine of Retinol with a good dose of Vitamin C in the day, that work hand in hand to fight aging and give you a flawless finish.
